NAVIGO Technology is a GIS technology developed by specialists in PPWK Inwestycje. This technology is aimed at accomplishment of merely some selected functionality of GIS adjusted to the requirements of a specific group of users. The software based on NAVIGO technology is treated as one of the elements of comprehensive GIS systems, using, among others, standard platforms (made by ESRI, Intergraph, MapInfo, AutoCAD Map or Bentley Geographics). However, this is an element or component aimed at the final business user who does not deal professionally with GIS.
NAVIGO technology is a simple and cheap interface of access to geographic information. An idea of the development of NAVIGO software is to enable the distribution of geographic data and basic functions and operations on such data in a friendly form for the final user. This is allowed by a strictly defined group of functions available to specific applications, enabling fast mastering of the software operation and adjustment to the user’s expectations.
A characteristic feature of the solutions based on NAVIGO technology is the provision, as a closed whole, of both GIS function and geographic data.
During the works on digital cartography technology in PPWK S.A. the company’s own format of spatial database was worked out, which integrates the navigation data, cartographic objects, address data and information on POI (Points of Interest, i.e. Points of Special Importance). This format – PRDF – is characterised by a controlled precision of mapping, high degree of data compression, and exceptional effectiveness of work. The storage of data in PPWK’s internal formats enables to raise the effectiveness of the data use and reduce the product’s cost for the final user.
Originally, NAVIGO was not designed as a universal GIS platform. It is a product used to programming applications aimed at the users who apply spatial data in their work but do not professionally deal with GIS.
NAVIGO is a perfect map component of CRM application, monitoring of vehicles, transport applications, as well as spatial resources applications, and many others....
NAVIGO technology is underlying by the development of one’s own system core, i.e. kernel. Kernel accomplishes the basic functions of GIS, using programing modules contained in the library kernell.dll. These functions are:
• visualisation of spatial (raster and vector) data based on a profile determined independently of the data • universal functions (incl. selection of object, searching for objects database, planning the route, recalculation of coordinates – the list of functions accomplished by the kernel is open) • integration of various external sources of data having some spatial reference (PRDF, SWDE, SQL and geocoded rasters in format Jpeg2000)
NAVIGO Technology was worked out so that in result of a compilation of the same source code we obtain the basic products allowing for the development of applications on the following platforms:
• Applications PC Windows –VC++, MFC • Applications .Net – Solutions in Internet. • Applications PDA Windows CE • ActiveX – Product for independent producers of solutions in Windows environment (Visual Basic, C#, VC++)

Working out additional functionality within the basic module kernel can be immediately used on the other platforms.
An important feature of NAVIGO technology is the possibility of data distribution in PRDF format with NavigoX (ActiveX Control).
In its basic version ActiveX with a map is functioning as the main map of application Navigo – Road map of Poland.
The component can be embedded in applications programmed in the environments supporting the technology ActiveX: Visual Basic, Visual C++, Borland C++, Borland Delphi, and even MS Access. This gives unlimited possibilities of implementing the ready-made maps and NAVIGO functionality to producers of the solutions in Windows environment.

An extremely important feature of NAVIGO is a possible access to geographic functions and data via Internet. This is due to the component named I-Mapa.
I-Mapa is a system of independent–in equipment respect–services based on network communication by means of protocol SOAP which enables an access from a random device equipped with www connection. At present I-Mapa services enable the display of maps, management of layers, searching for objects and calculation of routes.
I-Mapa can be a technological platform rendering services for mass recipients through Internet, GSM operators (GPRS), GIS solutions for big clients (e.g. banks, wholesalers, public administration, armed forces, police, crisis management services). A wide possibility of scaling, limited equipment demand, easy integration with the recipient’s information systems – these are the basic features of this technological platform.
The main advantages of products using the NAVIGO technology:
• flexibility of licensing, low cost for the user • easy adjustment to other systems existing in corporations without a need to restructure them • having one’s own, fully integrated geographic database • coherence of applications PC, PDA, mobile phones and internet map servers • easy use and number of functions limited to minimum indispensable to user • combined provision of functions and data relieving the user of advanced operations of “input” and professional cartographic presentation of data • efficacy of solutions • little equipment and program requirements, including very little requirements within the disk space • full integration with GPS
The areas of potential applications of NAVIGO largely match the areas of applications of all GIS systems, subject to adopted functional limitations to specific groups of functions. And so, for instance, NAVIGO technology is not dedicated to creation of the systems of data acquisition, advanced data processing, or professional cartographic production.
